| In the over 700 year old stone house, the Palas, a town castle, the interesting history of the south German schnapps distillery has been presented since 1993. In the beginning, distilled alcohol was precious medicine and was considered "Aqua Vitae", the water of life, above all by the ladies. First the development of effective distillation equipment made possible the economical manufacture of brandy as a luxury item. Tax increases for the schnapps distillery was supposed to keep consumption in check but at the same time it was a welcome source of money for the state. Illegal distilleries, particularly those thrown together by necessity of the war and the post war period, show the fantastic possibilities for tax evasion. Today the 24,000 small distilleries in Baden-Württemberg are seen above all as guarantor for the yield of the many fruit orchards. | ||||
